From Fur Babies to Fire Hydrants: Your Home Insurance Premiums

When I got my kids a dog, I had no idea that it could affect my homeowners insurance. I happened to run into my insurance agent in the store when I was buying dog food and he asked me what kind of dog we had. When I told him, he said I should stop in the office the next day. I had no idea that things like this could affect premiums, so I started asking what else could do it as well. I created this site to help others understand some of the finer points of homeowners insurance and what they should think about to manage their rates.

Buying A Motorbike? Here's What To Look For When Choosing An Insurance Policy

Insurance Blog

Now that the time has come to purchase a motorbike, you are probably preparing to purchase an insurance policy for it. Here are a few features to look for when comparing your options:

Coverage for Custom Add-ons

If you plan to install one or more custom accessories on your new motorcycle, it's a good idea to look for an insurance policy that offers coverage for those things. Whether you're installing an expensive set of saddlebags, a backup camera, or a new custom seat, make sure that you are able to get extra coverage for the items so you don't end up having to replace them out of pocket if you get into an accident or if your motorcycle is stolen or vandalized. You will likely have to pay an additional fee for this extra coverage, but you'll be afforded peace of mind in knowing that your losses will be minimized if anything were to ever happen to your bike.

Roadside Assistance

Another feature to look for when choosing an insurance policy for your new motorcycle is access to roadside assistance. For a nominal fee, you should be able to opt in to a service program that will provide you with things such as tows, flat tire assistance, and fuel delivery throughout the year when you find yourself in a bind. Since it would be packaged in with your insurance plan, you'll likely save some money over buying a roadside assistance package from a third party.

Convenient Claims Reporting

The last thing anybody wants to do after being in an accident or discovering their motorcycle stolen is go through a long, drawn out claims reporting process. When comparing insurance policies, find out what the claims process is for each of them, and whether or not a processing guarantee is offered. While some insurance policies indicate a guaranteed processing timeline, others may not offer even an estimated timeline for resolution. Make sure you are clear about how the claims process works before purchasing your policy to ensure that you know exactly what to expect if you need to file a claim of any kind in the future.

Various Payment Options

It's also a good idea to look for a policy that offers multiple payment options, as you never know when your financial circumstances might change in the future. You may plan to pay for your policy a year at a time now, but that doesn't mean that you will be able to do so next year; on the other hand, just because you plan to make payments now doesn't mean that you won't be able to pay for your policy in full at some point in the future. Make sure your policy will allow you to make bi-weekly or monthly payments in addition to full payments, in case you need to take advantage of those options later down the line.
