From Fur Babies to Fire Hydrants: Your Home Insurance Premiums

When I got my kids a dog, I had no idea that it could affect my homeowners insurance. I happened to run into my insurance agent in the store when I was buying dog food and he asked me what kind of dog we had. When I told him, he said I should stop in the office the next day. I had no idea that things like this could affect premiums, so I started asking what else could do it as well. I created this site to help others understand some of the finer points of homeowners insurance and what they should think about to manage their rates.

Car Insurance Questions And Answers For New Drivers

When you get a car, you will also need to get car insurance. You have to carry that insurance on your vehicle because you can get in trouble if you are found to be driving without it. Not only can you be fined, but you can also be sued personally for a lot of money if you happen to get in an accident while you are driving without insurance. You'll likely have a lot of questions about car insurance if you have ever had to purchase it. Here are some answers to questions that a lot of people have when first learning the ins and outs of auto insurance:

Do you still have to pay for car insurance if you aren't driving the car?

If your car is registered, which it needs to be by law, then you are also required to carry car insurance, even if the car is parked and never driven. The only way to avoid paying the insurance is to register the car as non-op with the Department of Motor Vehicles. If you are found to not be carrying insurance on a car that doesn't have a non-op, then your rates may rise due to penalties, and you can get fines. When your car does have a non-op on it, you will not be able to drive it at all until you get it registered again through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Why do insurance companies give discounts?

The insurance companies give discounts for various reasons. The reason is that when drivers meet the criteria needed to get a discount, they are also showing that they are less of a risk. For example, they can get a lower rate if they park their car in the garage. If the car is parked in the garage, then there are fewer chances of it being vandalized by people, experiencing weather-related issues, stolen, or otherwise damaged. This means there will be less of a chance that the driver will ever need to file a claim for these things.

What kinds of discounts do most insurance companies offer?

Some of the different things that drivers can get discounts for include driving less than the average mileage per year, having a safer car, having an alarm installed, living in an area considered to be a safer area, having a good driving record, and bundling the policy with a homeowners insurance policy.
